About
Idaho Shakespeare Festival has performed “great theater in the great outdoors” since 1977. Summer months in the Treasure Valley sparkle with live theater with the Boise Foothills as an additional backdrop to performances. Located in a beautiful nature reserve along the Boise River, the Festival produces classic works by Shakespeare, musicals, and modern plays in an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 770 patrons. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, as well as picnic supplies—picnicking before performances is a long-standing tradition at the Festival.
Performances
The Festival’s 2019 season runs from May through September and includes Shakespearean classics like The Taming of the Shrew (May 24th—June 23rd) and Julius Caesar (August 1st—29th). The season also includes fan-favorite musicals such as The Music Man (June 28th—September1st) and modern plays like Witness for the Prosecution by Agatha Christie (May 31st—July 28th). Tickets go on sale on April 1st and can be reserved for a variety of seating options.
Education
In addition to performing for audiences around Boise, Idaho Shakespeare Festival is dedicated to teaching the next generation the joy of live theater through several educational programs that reach 50,000 children and young adults in the tri-state area. Idaho Theater For Youth visits elementary schools in 80% of Idaho’s counties, performing for many children who are being exposed to live theater for the first time. The group will perform The Magician’s Nephew January through April 2019. Shakespearience tours middle and high schools around Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, scaling-down Shakespearean plays into 50-minute segments to coincide with a classroom period. This year, Shakespearience will be touring As You Like it from February through April. Idaho Shakespeare Festival also hosts theater camps throughout the school year and summer in downtown Boise, serving children PreK—12th grade.
